The Fountains of Paradise won the 1980 Hugo Award for best novel as well as the 1979 Nebula award and was nominated for both the British Science Fiction Association Award and the Locus Award.
The main science fiction element of this book is that of the space elevator. A tower connected to a satellite in orbit which reduces the cost of putting things in orbit to almost nothing. It also looks at the conflict between religion and modern culture.
